Hi all, Hope all of you are doing well. The last weekend of February was very uneventful. Saturday was a very boring day. I felt ill and slept in my chair most of the day. Sunday was again, another boring day but I was pleasantly surprised to see ESPN on ABC televising the USA 7’s Rugby Tournament taped last month in San Diego. Rugby 7’s is the short version of Rugby Union, it’s played with 7 players compared to Rugby Union’s 15. Rugby 7’s only has 7-minute halves (10 minutes in championship games) compared to 40-minute halves in Union. The field is a lot smaller than Rugby Union so there is a lot more scoring in 7’s games. You can imagine how fun it was to watch! I hope ESPN does more Rugby 7’s events, at the end of the program announcer Dave Sitton did say “See you next time on the ESPN family of networks.” I hope this is true and it’s on ESPN in the United States and not on ESPN International, which I fear because; as you probably know we can’t get ESPN International.
The big news of this past weekend was the return of Tiger Woods to the PGA Tour at the Match Play Championship in Arizona. I think this is a bad move to come back at the Match Play Championship as it is one of the hardest tournaments in golf, the event starts on Wednesday (most tournaments start on Thursday), if Tiger gets to the weekend he may have to play the equivalent of one tournament in just two days. The PGA Tour defiantly needs Tiger, as ratings are down by 50 %. It’s great excitement for golf and I’M defiantly looking forward to it. The Match Play Championship is one of my favorite tournaments of the year because it’s one on one and just like the NCAA Basketball tournament it is loose and go home.
UPDATE #1: Tiger lost in the second round on Thursday to Tim Clark. Oh well, NBC is not pleased but what are you going to do, my advice to NBC is don’t put all your eggs in one basket. It was not a given that he would get to the weekend, it’s Match Play, anything can happen. There are still some great stories in action, like 19-year-old Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland, and, is it possible for Phil Mickelson win this title?
UPDATE #2: No Phil can’t win he was knocked out by Stewart Cink on Friday. Still it should be great golf.
UPDATE #3: Well it’s over and Geoff Ogilvy is the champion. This is his second Match Play title; he won it back in 2006. The other big story was that 19-year-old Rory McIlroy lost in the quarterfinals to Ogilvy. The next World Golf Championship is in two weeks in Miami. We will see.
Big news to me, NBC’s Universal Sports Channel covered the US Olympics Curling trials this weekend. The winning men and women's teams will be nominated to represent the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Also Universal Sports will have coverage of both the Men and Women’s World Championships Curling this month. Curling is a great sport that is like shuffleboard on ice. You just have to watch to know what I mean.
UPDATE: I watched, and I enjoyed it very much. Curling is a sport that combines strategy and execution of shoot. This was the first live coverage of curling in the United States out side the Olympics. I’M really looking forward to the World Championships.
This week I’M off to Washington D.C for a Special Olympics meeting. I will talk to you and give you my take on the Jim Calhoun Press Conference ambush when I come back.
Good-bye and good luck

the week that was and the week to come
The big story last week was Alex Rodriguez admitted to using steroids from 2001 to 2003. This DOES not surprise me at all. Baseball and the fans are at fault for the steroid era. Baseball turned a blind eye to performing-enhancing drug users, because the Home Run became the attraction of the game. By 1998 ESPN had started live coverage of the Home Run Derby at the All-Star week. Also at this time there was a famous advertisement campaign with the slogan “Chicks Dig the Long Ball.” All this contributed to the pressure to perform. I think it’s better for A-Rod to admit to using steroids and finally come clean now than to continue denying it like others such as Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. History will look at A-Rod more kindly for admitting and I think he might still have a chance to get into the Hall of Fame.
Tuesday February 17, 2009 A-Rod held his first Press Conference since an interview he did with ESPN last week. He said a cousin injected him with an over-the-counter drug designed to give an "energy boost." He also said that it was a mistake that his cousin obtained these banned drugs from the Dominican Republic I understand this was before testing and the culture was different back in the early 90’s but if I were a pro baseball player I would look at what I was putting in my body before I used it.
A side story to this is that Miguel Tejeda was charged with lying to Congress about performance enhancing drug useage the same week. For lying, he faces up to one year in federal prison and deportation as he was born in the Domican Republic.
The other major story last week was the second retirement of Brett Favre. I say second because he retired last year but came back to play. We wll see if this retirement holds before I talk about it.
This Weekend
This weekend’s big event is the final stop of the Winter Dew Tour from Lake Tahoe, CA. Saturday is the Freesking Slopestyle final from 2:30 to 4 P.M. on NBC. Sunday is the Snowboarding Superpipe final from 3 to 6 P.M. again on NBC Sports. Like I said this is the final stop of the Tour, so the season-long champions will be crowned. Should be fun.
The next big event is an Ultimate Fighting Championship card on free TV; UFC 95 live from London, England at 9 P.M. on Spike TV.
The main event of the card is the first winner of the Ultimate Fighter Reality TV show, Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez who will move up from welterweight to lightweight to challenge former world title contender Joe “Daddy” Stevenson. UFC is always a good time.
In other news, the UFC is about to get some competition on National TV from Showtime and CBS. I think the frist Showtime live event will be April 11, no word on the first CBS show, I think it will be in May. When I know I will let you all know.
Also this weekend is the Oscars. Usually I don’t like or have an intrest in seeing any of the movies up for the awards, but this year I wil watch because of the two movies“The Wrestler” and “Frost/Nixon”. I hope Mickey Rourke wins for best actor. Yes I’M a wresting fan. I also would like to see “Frost/Nixon” win Best Picture. Frost/Nixon is a true story about a series of interviews by Robert Frost /Richard Nixon after Watergate. I think the BBC just released the real interviews. .
Enjoy the games.
Talk to you next week if not before.

Recapeing the Super Bowl 2009
Well last Sunday night was another classic “Super Bowl”, as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23, in a game that was not decided until the end. The first half Pittsburgh jumped out to a ten-point lead, and it looked like a blowout. But, Arizona came back with a touchdown to make it a ballgame. To end the first half James Harrison intercepted a Kurt Warner pass and ran it back 100 yards for a touchdown. This was the longest play in Super Bowl history. The third quarter saw a defense battle with only a Pittsburgh field goal to give them a 20 to 7 lead and it looked like it was over. But, Arizona can back in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown to make it 20 to 14. Then we had a rare safety 2 pointer, this made it 20 to 16 Pittsburgh. This is when it gets crazy; Arizona scored a touchdown with a picture perfect 64-yard pass from Warner to Larry Fitzgerald right up the middle of the field to make it 23 to 20, Arizona led for the first time. Then Pittsburgh drove down the field for the game-wining touchdown: Ben Roethlisberger 6-yard pass to Santonio Holmes in the corner of the endzone. My keys to the game was the play of Pittsburgh’s defense, and the fact that Arizona had 106 yards in penalties, the most in Super Bowl history. What a game!!
Lets me give my grades for the NBC broadcast of the event. Lets start with the pre game show, like I said last time it was a cast of thousands or about 25. I liked how they had Keith Olbermann and Jerome Bettis in the Pittsburgh locker room and Dan Patrick and Tiki Barber in the Arizona locker room before the teams got there. This was when Jerome and Tiki were at their best telling us what their experiences were like playing in the Super Bowl. I liked how they had Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, with Tony Dungy, Mike Holmgrem, and Matt Millen on the main set inside Raymond James Stadium and Keith, Dan and the rest, round and about on other sets outside the stadium. Cris Collinsworth proved that he is the best analyst in the business; his knowledge and passion for the game really shine through. Tony was ok; Mike was much better because he gave us great insight about the game and every thing that goes in the Super Bowl. Matt Millen was very good; he can be very useful to NBC next year. They need to get rid of Tiki and hire Matt! Rodney Harrison has a future in TV after his playing days are over. The two segments that I did not like were the “Super Suite” hosted by Al Roker; this was the celebrity part of the show. It was just a way to promote NBC Universal TV shows and movies, and was just awful and took away for the game. The other segment that was no good was the “Cook-off” It just had too many cooks in the kitchen. The game telecast was great; John Madden and Al Michaels are the best team. Al can print picture with words and John has a great passion for football. Alex Flanagan was the big surprise of the show. This was her first big assignment for NBC Sports and you could tell she was very nevious at the start of the day, but as the day went on you could see potential in her. It does help that she’s easy on the eyes, if you know what I mean. The Boss was the Boss at halftime. The best part was Bruce doing the knee slide right into the camera, classic stuff. Post game was ok: nice to see Dan Patrick getting the Trophy presentation, it’s a hard job but he handed it with grace.
Overall I give NBC an A-. The “Super Suite” and the “Cook-off” segments brought them down a bit but overall great show. I think NBC has set the “blueprint” of how to do Super Bowl Sunday programming, lets see what CBS can do next year.
See you next week, if not before.

The week in sports
Tuesday January 20,2009 was a historic day in American history. The first Africa American was sworn in as our country’s 44th President, that moment will be in the history books. It was a moment historians and scholars will be dissecting for years and decades to come. It was a day to be a proud American and to celebrate our democracy. He has already kept a lot of his campaign promises like closing down the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Change has definitely come to America.
Now back to sports.
The two weeks between the Super Bowl and the Conference Championship Games are one of the most boring times of the year. The last week especially, on all of the ESPN talk shows it’s all about the Super Bowl and the Draft. You had all this week to talk about the Super Bowl, and the Draft is not until April. ESPN should limit the talk to Monday after the Conference Championship Games then end it. The NFL Draft talk should be done after the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl: let the season end first. Speaking of the Pro Bowl it looks like it will move to the week between the Championships Games and the Super Bowl as well as to the Super Bowl city of Miami next season. Good move, it gives us something to watch and gives the Pro Bowl the spotlight it needs.
Speaking of ESPN, they are looking for a new Ombudsman. The Ombudsman is the public's representative to ESPN, offering independent examination and analysis of ESPN's media outlets. I’M in, I watch ESPN all the time and I am critical of them most of the time. My opinion is that ESPN takes itself too seriously. Take last week for instance; they issued a press release about reporter Chris Berman covering the Super Bowl, why? It is not about what ESPN is or their reporters are doing at the Super Bowl it’s about the game. But they made the story about a reporter instead of an athlete; this should not be the case.
Please ESPN I need a job!
This Weekend
This weekend is Super Bowl Sunday. This year’s game is on NBC and its their 16th Super Bowl but first since 1998. Super Sunday kicks-off at 9 A.M. with a special three-hour edition of the “Today Show” with Meredith, Al, and Ann in Tampa. The official pre-game show begins at Noon with NFL Films Production “Road to the Super Bowl” review of the season. Starting at 1 P.M. is NBC Sports Super Bowl XLIII Pregame show with a cast of thousands, literarily. The highlight of the Pregame will be Matt Lauer will have a live interview with President Brack Obama from the White House. Kick off is set for 6:30 P.M., the Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Arizona Cardinals. Jennifer Hudson will sing “The Star Spangled Banner” before kickoff. The half-time entertainment is: The Boss” Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band.
My pick is the Steelers, but it will be closer than most people think.
I’M actually looking forward to the pre game show. I like Bob Costas and Keith Olbermann and I want to see how they will use the cast of thousands on the program.
Take care and talk to you next week.

Cost of Living adjustment
Hi everyone
This is the commentary I give on WINY 1350 AM radio this morning. Please give me some feedback on this topic. I want to hear form you.
One thing that has really been bugging me for a while is, the CT Legislature has not given Private Providers, who support people with disabilities, a cost of living adjustment in some 20 years. In that same time frame they have given state workers a raise many times. Why not give others a sample cost of living adjustment like you give yourselves? My question is, why is it that people with disabilities and their support systems always at the bottom of the totem pole? People with disabilities are one of the largest minority groups in the country, in fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau more than 54 million U.S. residents, or about 19 percent of the population have some sort of disability, but they are the last group to receive recognition, services and monetary help. People with disabilities need assistance, and in order to keep good employees we need to keep up with the cost of living adjustments as most of the competitors do. What I mean by this is, the cost of living has gone up every year for 20 years and it’s getting tougher and tougher to keep our staff. If I did not have a person helping me with my daily living tasks and pushing me to be my best I would not be here today. We are not asking for much just one little cost of living adjustment in 20 long years.
2009 will be a pivotal year in this fight as the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) will be conducting a detailed cost review of care provided in a institutional settings as apposed to care provided in the community. One of the factors they will be looking at is the difference in staff costs between public (state) and private providers. Hopefully this report will show that it is a cost savings to the state to have their people within DDS served by private providers. This is not about the many state employees who are caring wonderful people who work very hard to support us. This is about the system not recognizing that employees who work in private provider agencies work just as hard and are just as caring and supportive of us. After all, no matter, whether you work for the state or The Arc you are working toward the same goals, to support individuals with disabilities to become independent and accepted members of their community.
Connecticut is only one of three states in the Union that still provide a two tier service where all other states provide all their services through the use of Private Providers and at a greatly reduced cost to the State.
Senator Dan Debicella of Connecticut is in the process along with others in putting together a bill that would move the 4000 clients that are supported by DDS and moving them to be supported by The Private Provider. Even after adjusting the salaries upwards for the Private Provider's the savings to The State could exceed 400 million annually.

The week that was and the week to come
Hope you all had a Happy New Year. New Years Eve and New Years Day have added two new events that I hope will be around for sometime. On New Years Eve for the past two years ESPN has presented Red Bull: New Year No Limits. Last year Robbie Maddison broke the world record for a motorcycle jump (322’ 7.5”) with a leap over the length of a football field. This year Maddison attempted a more elaborate, but equally challenging jump. He jumped more than 120 feet high to land on the top of the 96-foot-high replica Arc de Triomphe in front of the Paris, Las Vegas Hotel. Upon completing the jump he then performed a freefall 50 feet off the Arc to a ramp below. Here is the video:
Sorry for the f bombs in the video but you can understand. That was just crazy and nuts, great alternative to the ball drop in Times Square. I hope ESPN keeps up this new tradition.
On New Years day the NHL presented there second annual outdoors Winter Classic. This year’s game was played at Wrigley Field, the home of baseballs Chicago Cubs. What I like about this is that it is old school, in that most people start out playing hockey outside and this year’s game was a heated Original Six-Rivalry and it was a divisional match-up between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. Original Six means that Detroit and Chicago are two of the oldest teams in the league. What I also like about the Winter Classic is that the announcers are outdoors like the rest of the event, this gives the game a better feel for the weather conditions. All and all it is a great event and an alternative to the meaningless Bowl Games on New Years Day. It looks like the Boston Bruins will get a Winter Classic in the near future. Just think about hockey at Fenway Park that would be a lot of fun. I hate the winter and cold but I would not mind covering that.
I’M glad to see a staple of my youth coming back this summer. According to Variety, ABC is bringing back the “Superstars” for a six-episode run in June. As originally conceived, the show pitted pro athletes opposite each other in sports like swinning, biking, running and a obstacle course was the final event. In this vision of the "Superstars," eight celebs will be paired with eight male and female pro athletes to compete in various events, including swimming, biking, running and kayaking. Teams will be eliminated each week, until one athlete/celebrity pair is crowned the champs.
This weekend in Sports
This weekend the NFL Playoffs continues with the Divisional Round. On Saturday in the AFC it’s Baltimore at Tennessee (4:30) on CBS, the other Saturday game is Arizona at Carolina on FOX at 8 P.M. On Sunday is Philadelphia at the New York Giants on FOX at 1 P.M., then its San Diego at Pittsburgh at 4:30 P.M. on CBS. Enjoy, all the action.
The alternative to the football is the second stop of the Winter Dew Tour from Mount Snow in Vermont. TV coverage is Saturday 4:30 to 6 P.M. and Sunday 4:30 to 6 P.M., both days on NBC. Saturday will feature freestyle skiing in a Superpipe. Sunday is the Main Event with the snowboard Superpipe. Always fun and crazy, you never know what there kids will do. By the way, these kids are athletes, you tray to do what they do.
Enjoy the weekend. Good by and good luck.
